Module 1 : Port Regionalization, Inland Terminals and Last Mile Logistics
Starts at 10.25 hrs
- by Jean-Paul Rodrigue, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the Hofstra University of New York
While the long distance freight distribution system of maritime shipping is prone to economies of scale and its related energy and environmental efficiencies, what is known as the “last mile” remains a challenge. First, last mile logistics involves transport chains that are much less prone to economies of scale. Second, the last mile is inherently complex as it concerns in addition to port operations, a whole array of inland transport segments that must be taken into consideration to insure the continuity of port-centric supply chains. Therefore, port regionalization has been a prevailing strategy to rationalize last mile logistics with the incorporation of inland terminals and logistics zones as active nodes in shaping load center development. It is also characterized by strong functional interdependency and even joint development of specific logistics zones in the hinterland, ultimately leading to the formation of a regional load center network.
Module 2: Embedding Inland Terminals in the European Transport Network
Starts at 10.50 hrs
- by Larissa van der Lugt, Senior Researcher Port and Transport Economist, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Faculty of Economics, Department of Regional, Transport and Port Economics
Just how are inland terminals embedded in the whole of the European transport network (or are they likely to become)?, And particularly, how is their relationship with seaports in terms of the overall market organisation shaping up? Who is in the driving seat? Completely different case studies can be given, all the more reason to investigate which consequences the various models have on the performance of the complete network and/or of individual terminals. In European research and policy making such an investigation has up until now remained somewhat under the radar.
Coffee Break at 11.15 hrs sponsored by ![]()
Module 3: Intermodality in the MED countries
Starts at 11.45 hrs
- by Delphine Dubreuil, Catram Consultants, Paris
A key point in most of the south Med countries: most of the imported goods are containerized, and many ports are embedded in old cities or have insufficient capacity to operate the incoming containers. Hence a definite need to develop an efficient network of intermodal services; railway links based on dry ports are a reliable and sustainable way to reach the hinterland.
It will also become increasingly necessary in the near future to develop a logistic network to export goods and especially agri-food products to Europe. Short Sea Shipping offers a promising potential to support export logistic chains.
In both cases, inland terminals management appears to be of strategic necessity.
Module 4: The View of Logistical Operators
Starts at 12.10 hrs
In a reaction to the previous more academic speakers module four reveals the viewpoints of logistical operators on how they organise the rail/road/inland waterway connections between seaports and inland terminals, what their strategy is, what the difficulties are, how they overcome them and what the future holds.
- by Xavier Moliné, Director at TCB, Terminal de Contenidors de Barcelona
Intermodal services development : achieved succes and challenges ahead
