Paris - France
Port Autonome de Paris / Port of Paris Authority
Since its creation in 1970, the aim of the state-owned Port of Paris Author-ity has been to develop river traffic and port commerce. Under the su-pervision of the French Ministries of Facilities & Amenities, Housing and Transport, PPA creates, maintains, promotes and oversees the commer-cial activity of the ports along the wa-terways in the Ile-de-France region.
PPA has a strong commitment to environmentally sound development and economic growth. This commitment is demonstrated in all aspects – from on-site business set-up, promotion of alternative modes of transport and installation of riverfront facilities, to ensuring that the harbours blend in well with the environment and industrial risk prevention.
The Port of Paris Authority is the largest river port in France and the second largest in Europe. PPA coordinates and oversees the operation of a network of 70 public harbours situated along 500 km of waterways, including the large multimodal platforms of Gennevilliers (Hauts-de-Seine), of Bonneuil (Val-de-Marne) and of Limay (Yvelines), and 200 private industrial harbours.
PPA has been a catalyst for industrial growth in the Ile-de-France region. An urban logistics system that is both environmentally sound and economically viable, that benefits a wide variety of sectors ranging from Building and Civil Engineering Works, cereals and petroleum products to automobiles and waste.
In the coming years, PPA will invest €145 million in river transport development. These funds combined with the financial contributions of Waterways of France within the framework of the XIIth plan to shore up and upgrade the dams and locks of the Seine river basin are expected to create a boom in alternative modes of transport. This should, in accordance with objectives of the Urban Travel Scheme in Ile-de-France, alleviate some of the pressure in the Paris area created by substantial heavy truck traffic. In addition, funds have been invested by the national collective services programme for transport and most recently, funds have been allocated at the European level (revision of the 1996 directive on trans-European networks).
